"Model United Nations (MUN) is an activity in which students simulate United Nation's committee by roleplaying as delegates"
Basically... At a Model UN conference, YOU will be representing a country in a United Nations committee. Your committee will be focusing on a global issue (ranging from cyber security, to terrorism, to healthcare, to climate change...) with the ultimate goal of passing a 'resolution' detailing how the UN will solve this problem. During the conference you will discuss and debate the issue at hand, seek out partnerships with nations that share similar views, and look to write and pass a resolution that has your country's interests in mind. |
Why MUN?
Here are some of our favorite things about MUN:
International Politics from a different point of view
Once you get assigned to a country, you are that country! This means that all opinions and conversations you have will be from the point of view of your nation, and those opinions may differ from your personal beliefs. You get to research from a completely different perspective from your own, learn the ins and outs of a country, and more. It's also fun to walk up to someone and say, "Hi Yemen, nice to meet you, I'm Croatia!"
The Conferences
Conferences are a highlight of the year. During a conference, you'll spend two and a half days at Stanford or Cal with hundreds of other teens. You'll discuss and debate your committee's issues, and put your preparation and research to use! For BMUN, we stay in a hotel in downtown Berkeley. Committee sessions keep you busy for most of the day, but there's always time to explore downtown Berkeley with your friends and meet new people. There's also a delegate dance on Saturday night!
Expand your skill set and explore your interests
MUN is a fun and interactive way to learn more about global politics and the UN. With the wide variety of committees at MUN conferences, you can explore a topic that particularly interests you. MUN also develops valuable researching and public speaking skills. There is always room for growth!
